What to do with picky eaters?

My 6 y.o. nephew (my sister's son) is a very picky eater...the only things he eats are instant pancit canton, roast chicken and rice. He's been like this for years and he still absolutely resists any efforts from his mother to try new foods. She says that it's a phase that he'll outgrow soon. I'm wondering if it's right to just wait it out. Do any of you have experiences with your kids (or even yourselves) being picky eaters?

Wow! Thanks for all the helpful tips, dapple and jenny. I know it won't be easy or tactful to try to discuss this with my Ate just yet, so I'll try to interact directly with my nephew regarding these, whenever I get the chance. |

Children at this age should have been eating many types of foods. If pancit canton is a favorite, maybe the mother can cook her own version by adding bits of veggies like cabbage, baguio pechay and carrots so as to change a little bit the taste but not too far from the original pancit canton. The cuts should be very small and thin so the child will not recognize the taste of the vegetable at all. This will be good as a start of introducing vegies, eventually she can change it to a bigger size once the child was used to it. Eat with the child and let him see what the parents eat. From time to time encourage the child to eat new food but do not force him. You can also give him choices beteween two types of good food. So that the child would feel that he has the opportunity to choose what to eat. If you want him to eat other dishes let him taste a small portion and promise him that if he doesn't want the taste of the food you will not force him to eat it but he needs to taste it first. By doing this, you got the chance to know if that kind of food you are offering will catch his taste or not. If he says it tastes good, then you got to add it more often to those foods he is already familiar. For example, gradually decrease the servings of the pancit and give more servings of the new food. Chicken can be cooked in different styles maybe the mother can introduce other ways of cooking chicken like terriyaki, barbecue or any way that is nearly the taste of roast chicken. The important thing to emphasize to the child is that it is still chicken. And lastly, just remember to offer one kind of food at a time. |

During my younger years I also use to be a picky eater for one reason: Yaya cooks like crap. During those times I only ate fried chicken, spaghetti and nilagang baka. Sometimes those instant noodles and mushroom soup gives me the appetite, and some vegetables, but I really choose the food I take (even until now). One of the good ways is to change the menu list into creative, attractive and foods which are 'new' to the child. Try scanning the pages of your recipe book and add some garnish to the food to make it look attractive and interesting to eat. Also, adding dessert on the table will make it more enticing. I have to confess though... that one thing that I do to eat more rice is to add Star margarine in it...yucky for others, but for me i love it, hehe! |
