Depression and weight loss

I've been reading through a bunch of your blogs and found one common theme that strings us together = depression. let's face it, there are moments in our lives that have deeply affected our decisions and seem to recur whether we like it or not. The community on BelleToday addresses weight loss... and in our case, we address the depression tied to this.
I have read through stories wherein depression has affected our self-image. I know exactly what that can feel like, and its never easy to gain the esteem we so badly need. Tell us your story here and lets find ways to come together and lift each others spirits.

Thanks for sharing your story. We are so excited to have you on The Bon Appetit Diet. We just had our 1st meet-up with Dr. Jean-Michel Cohen and some of our members gave their testimoniaqls on the weight loss they had during the course of the diet and it was really rewarding to see the positive changes in them not only on the weight loss part but also on the confidence they gained. We hope to have you on our next meet-up soon.

I was feeling a bit depressed because of my weight gain. A lot of people would ask me if im pregnant, when i'm not, because of my big tummy. I was even asked in the airport if im pregnant. I was really ashamed that time, esp when my husband teased me.i also dont want to be tagged on pictures posted on fb because i dont want to see and my friends to seemy fat body. But after 2 days of signing up at belle, i lost 2 lbs alrdy.i think its because im now conscious of what i take in.i stopped sodas, iced tea and coffee.i only drink water which is a big improvement for me.moreso, the inspiring ang motivating stories which i read in the blogs/forum. Im yet to start BAD on monday.and im looking forward to more beautiful results. Thanks a lot! |

This is a great topic, Gisa! I think it's important to keep yourself motivated and focus on positive aspects in your life. Often, we find ourselves eating way too much than what our body needs because we are not engaged in activities that fulfill us. Also, sometimes, we view dieting as punishment, because we're not allowed to eat our favorite foods, or because exercising feels too exhausting. Here are a few tips from my own personal experience. Always award yourself a little gift after each week of dieting. It could be your favorite piece of pie (a small piece of course), or a book, a bracelet, a little something to put a smile upon your face. Stop weighting yourself too often, because you'll end up obsessing over a number, and that's not good. Use a quantum scale (you should be able to find one online), it does not display your weight it simply records it and lets you know when your weight starts changing again. Try and turn exercising into a fun activity, include your friends in your work-out schedule. Depression is a very serious matter. We shouldn' let images promoted by the media affect our self esteem, but unfortunately that's hard to avoid. |

Beautiful story! When anyone goes into a state of personal crisis, he or she needs a strong support system not only to get them through the crisis but also create lasting bonds that will strengthen all of them personally, morally and socially. I'm so glad you found a strong support system in your husband kids and relatives and in your faith. Thank you for sharing! |

when i was diagnosed of lupus april 2003, greatest bouts of depression ruined my whole life. lupus is a life threatening disease that should be managed carefully. imagine! me? a 41 yr old wife & a mom to 3 wonderful kid cannot do anything? i would wake up feeling sluggish, tired & w/pains all over my body. i was given many medications including steroids. the once productive person i am became irritable, sad... but GOD! was so good He gave me a very supportive husband & family. i bravely faced life by accepting my disease. ACCEPTANCE is the ice breaker for my positive improvement. to this day, i'm enjoying life one day at a time. now! i have a mission of sharing something that changes people's lives. in conclusion it's FAITH & LOVE that still works! |

You're so right! Flashback to Evolutionary Psych. We're very visual and thats why we fall into this trap of getting obsessed with looks. And you're right, we really need to mix it up a bit. :) |

Do you know that when you exercise, you release a hormone called endorphins? Endorphins are known to be a "happy hormone". I suggest you break a sweat and start pumping up those endorphins.. Little steps will make abig difference =) On one note, I also had depression when I started dieting because of this one lizard-looking guy who is constantly bullying me way back in high school days. He is the very reason why I became so eager to lose weight. Time for revenge! He asked me for a dance on prom night and I said "NO!" hahahahahahah!!! |

This depression connected to the whole weight and female figure issue can be a vicious cycle. What every gal needs to do is break the cycle, whether by changing their diet or starting exercise (or better yet, both!). Breaking the cycle is key, even in cases of clinical depression. I've seen it happen before that a woman's confidence is directly linked to her appearance (you can thank evolution for that), so instead of moping around, every modern gal should just strap on her favorite set of shoes, wear a killer outfit and show everyone what a great woman she is! |

Thats a really nice dress!! and its perfect for hiding the belly especially if that's the underlying problem (pun intended). and as for putting on clothes and not being able to fit or reach for them, i understand how frustrating that must be! First there's an anger and then that anger slowly inspires us to act on it. |

A forgiving dress design I designed. Its at Bonne Bouche. Good topic Gisa! It''s so easy to say that we shouldnt be depressed due to unmanageable weight gain - and how we should be happy ith ourselves as we are. But it is easier said then done no? I was feeling absurdly matronly right before I started cutting carbs from my diet. This was due to the fact that I couldn''t strap my 5" gladiators myself anymore, I had to ask my yaya to help me. And how I couldn't button my fave pair of denim clam diggers. But after a 6 days of self control I am feeling fantastic again. I can reach my toes again (therefore rewarded myself with two more strappy platforms), and I wore my denims again today! But this is my take on it. I was overweight because i enjoyed my unlimited pasta vongole and Yang Chow rice dishes, and didnt work out. We cooked Mexican food and unlimited carbs! Therefore I was responsible for the results of these actions. We should take control of our bodies, what we eat, and our actions. This way we can also start eating better and getting more active once we know unhealthy habbits = an unhealthy overweight body. I really enjoy feeling light and sexy, especially since I love getting dressed. I even wear 5" wedges to the supermarket! LOL
